Protect Your Family & Community: Isolation & Quarantine

Right now, your family and  community need you to help stop the spread of COVID-19.  If you get COVID-19, you can’t provide for your family and protect your community. 

What's the difference between Isolation & Quarantine?

Isolation

  • Means you tested positive for COVID
  • You know for certain you have COVID

  • You are waiting for test results or haven't tested yet

Isolate, Quarantine, no Quarantine (but test & wear a mask)?

Isolate if:

No Quarantine (but test & wear a mask)

You tested positive for COVID and you are:

  • Vaccinated & due for a booster
  • Unvaccinated
  • Had COVID before
  • Symptoms or no symptoms

Quarantine if:

No Quarantine (but test & wear a mask)

Quarantine if:

You are awaiting test results or are symptomatic/have not tested yet & you are: 

  • Vaccinated & due for a booster
  • Unvaccinated
  • Had COVID before

You were exposed to COVID and you are:

  • Vaccinated & boosted
  • Vaccinated & it is too soon to get a booster

Isolation: You tested positive for COVID

WHO

Everyone who is:

  • Vaccinated
  • Unvaccinated
  • Had COVID before
  • Symptoms or no symptoms


WHAT TO DO

  1. Wear a mask around others for a full 10 days (even if you only isolate for 5 days)


5-Day Isolation

You can end after day 5 if:

  1. You do not have symptoms AND
  2. You tested on day 5 and the test was negative
  3. You monitor for symptoms & wear a mask for 5 more days


10-day Isolation

Isolation can end after day 10 if you are unable to test and:

  • You do not have symptoms or
  • You had symptoms and now they are gone


Isolation for 11 days or more

  • It is ok to end isolation at day 11 if symptoms (except fever) are not resolving
  • You must isolate until your fever is gone, no matter how long (You can still spread COVID when you have a fever)

Quarantine: Awaiting test results or have symptoms & haven't tested yet

WHO

You have symptoms and:

  • Awaiting test results or
  • Haven't tested yet





WHAT TO DO

  1. Stay home until you get the results of your test




If Your Test is Positive:

  • Follow instructions for isolation


If You Get Symptoms:

  • Get tested and stay home


If you are in a workplace setting and asymptomatic,  you are not required to stay home when:

  • You have a negative COVID test within 3-5 days after the last exposure
  • You wear a well-fitting mask around others for 10 days
  • You continue to have no symptoms

WHO

You were exposed to COVID and:

  • You have vaccinations & a booster
  • You have vaccinations & it is too soon to get a booster


WHAT TO DO

  1. Test on day 5
  2. Monitor for symptoms and wear a mask around others for 10 days


If Your Test is Positive:

  • Follow isolation instructions


If You get Symptoms:

  • Get tested and stay home

Rules of Isolation & Quarantine

  

  • Stay at home except to get medical care
  • Stay away from others in your home
    • Even if they had COVID before or are vaccinated
  • Do not have any visitors
  • Wear a mask 
  • Avoid sharing spaces or rooms
    • If you can’t, then open windows to outdoor air (if it is safe) or use air cleaners and exhaust fans
  • Avoid using the same bathroom as others
    • If you can’t, then clean all places you have touched
  • Cover your coughs and sneezes
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
    • If you can't, then use hand sanitizer 
  • Clean "high-touch" surfaces like doorknobs, faucets, refrigerator      handles & remote controls
